Congress: Reauthorize the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA)
On top of the legislative "to-do" list for Congress is to complete
their work to reauthorize the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA). NAA
and NMHC continue to lobby Congress, specifically the House of
Representatives, to act now before the program expires Dec 31, 2014.
Industry surveys indicate most multifamily property owners carry
terrorism coverage on their properties. Therefore, the need for a
continued program is a bottom line issue. Without the federal backstop,
it is very likely the product will not be widely available or
affordable.Your help is critical to this effort.
Please write to your Representative(s) and ask that they do two things:
1) reauthorize this program on a multi-year basis, and 2) do it before
the year-end expiration. The Senate has already passed a bill that we
supported. Now it is time for the House to do the same. Click here to send your letter. You can revise the letter to reflect specific company information and impact of TRIA's expiration.
Contact information is also available in NAA's Legislative Action Center for you to call your Representative's office. Click here for talking points on reauthorizing TRIA to use in your outreach.
The timing of your letters and calls coincides with the Lobby Day we are co-hosting with our colleagues in the Coalition to Insure Against Terrorism (CIAT) on Nov. 19 in Washington D.C. The combined effort will further increase our effectiveness.
