2015 SCAA Legislative Day
February 25, 2015 

Save the Date: The SCAA Legislative Day will be held on February 25th at the Capital City Club in Columbia. The day begins with presentations in the morning and then Lunch with the Legislators from 12-2pm. Stay tuned for more information including registration details to come.

CAA NAA PAC Funds

The CAA Board recently voted to donate $1,500 to Congressman Mick Mulvaney from our allocated NAA PAC funds and divide the remaining funds for distribution between Senator Lindsey Graham ($1,250) and Senator Tim Scott ($1,250).  The funds will be personally delivered by the Board of Directors to each politician.

2015 NAA Capitol Conference

Save the Date for "One Industry. One Voice." - Join your peers for the apartment industry's only national advocacy event where you become stronger advocates and then turn your knowledge into action with your members of Congress.  Fly in the afternoon of March 16, participate in advocacy education on March 17, then fly out after your Capitol Hill meetings on March 18 to make the most efficient use of your time and resources.  Registration opens in October.

The seminar will be conducted by Will Brownlee, the owner of Brownlee Law Firm, PLLC, a law firm with offices in Raleigh, Charlotte, and now Charleston, SC.   Will was born and raised in the Charleston area and is graduate of The Citadel and the N.C. Central School of Law. He has practiced law in North Carolina for the past 14 years and in South Carolina since 2011. Throughout his legal career, Will's primary focus has been in the area of landlord-tenant law, in which his firm represents landlords - and never tenants. At present, Brownlee Law Firm represents landlord clients in thousands of eviction cases per year, as well as representing landlord and property manager clients in North Carolina and South Carolina via training seminars, advice, fair housing disputes, regulatory compliance, lease drafting and corporate and business litigation.

A sampling of seminar topics:
  • Common resident violations of the Lease, including nonpayment, criminal activity, and noise violations
  • Landlord remedies in the event of breach/default of the Lease
  • Lease renewal and non-renewal provisions, including notice requirements
  • Exploring misconceptions about the Lease and possible loopholes (that can be filled via addenda)
  • Paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of the Lease, including a "Top Ten" issues list
  • Review of the lease enforcement, including ejectment
  • Review of the most used addendum in the NAA Click and Lease program

The courses will be taught using an overhead.  Students may bring his/her own laptop to follow along, but it is not required.  The material is presented in PowerPoint and demonstrated in MS Excel.  Handouts to the students will be presented at the beginning of the class with follow along on the overhead presentation for potential note taking.

Yearly Dues (pricing remains the same)

Properties:
Small: Annual dues: 1-74 units. $1.10 per unit ($65 minimum and covers CAA, SCAA & NAA dues) + $30.00 (NAA annual membership fee) + Optional: $10 donation to Charleston Cares & NAA Better Government Fund.

Large: 75 units and above. Annual dues: $2.10 per unit (covers CAA, SCAA & NAA dues) + $30.00 (NAA annual membership fee) + Optional: $10 donation to Charleston Cares & NAA Better Government Fund.
